Man does this video give us the chills!
In late July of 2008, A group of men thought it good to enjoy a day of fishing within the bounds of the seemingly endless Alaskan wilderness. Suddenly, as if out of nowhere a random Kodiak Grizzly Bear appeared in the not to far off distance, intent on exploring and investigating the little band of fishermen in his territory!
“We should just try to give him some space, with all of us here, he can’t do much…”
Now in the wilderness you have to be aware of the fact that you will come into contact with wildlife, that’s just a given. Depending on what region you are in, you have to prepare accordingly for the local creatures that you may encounter. While the Kodiak Bear can be a magnificent creature, and they do generally keep to them selves they can also be quite dangerous and without proper defense their attacks can be fatal!
You should always be prepared for this sort of thing in the Alaskan wilderness by bringing some sort of personal defense, whether it be a large caliber handgun, or bear spray.
The Kodiak Bear also known as the Alaskan Grizzly Bear is of course related to the mainland Grizzly bear, as well as the California Grizzly. What sets the Kodiak Bear apart is it is the largest recognized subspecies of brown bear, and one of the two largest bears alive today, its only competitor being further north: the polar bear. While most brown bears weight between 254-794 pounds, the Kodiak bear often reaches sized exceeding that, from 660-1,320 pounds!
This really is a bear you don’t want to mess around with!
The fishermen seemed to have been woefully unprepared for the bears advances when it decided that they were a threat to its territory. They did their best however, given the circumstances and tried to make as much racket as possible and stand tall hoping to scare the bear off. Unfortunately for them, the bear kept pursuing and was not falling for their ruse! Eventually the Kodiak decided it had had enough, and probably felt like its territory was secure and stopped following the previously unsuspecting anglers!
Thankfully no one was injured this time, but it serves as a reminder to always be prepared!
