The usually docile Atlantic Goliath Grouper has been known to sometimes get a little more than friendly with spear divers.  While this grouper is not the largest I’ve seen, I don’t think that matters very much when A giant fish decides to swallow your hand!  This guy had just made a good haul honestly, and being attacked by a massive and hungry fish was probably the last thing on his mind!

Grouper fish have been known to grow 14 feet in length and weigh as much as 1300 lbs! And those aren’t just the outliers, Atlantic Goliath Groupers in general are no laughing matter. Usually reaching up to 8 feet long, with an average weight of around 800 pounds these are a fish that is not to be trifled with especially when you’re in their element!

What is a grouper supposed to do, anyway, when a fish is injured in the neighborhood?” – Oceanographer Sylvia Earle

Over fifty types of grouper exist, as to color and feeding oddities. Some types are extremely voracious! Hell, this one didn’t care whether or not he got a whole human hand in the process, as long as he got his own fish dinner! If you want a challenge catching one of these guys, be prepared for a battle, just remember two things:

  1. Reeling in and decking an 800 pounder can be something else

  2. You can’t take her home, so catch and release!
